    KPACT

    Project Overview

I worked with Essie and Cindy from LifeWorks Psychotherapy to redesign and develop an expanded event and professional membership website.

Emily is a delight to work with. She is professional, knowledgeable, and committed. Her timely communication and organizational skills provided important scaffolding for our project, and the end result is clean, accessible, and user-friendly.

Essie Shachar-Hill, LCSW – Programs Manager, LifeWorks / KPACT

We used Advanced Custom Fields and Advanced Forms to create a member registration form which populates a custom post type for the Provider Directory. Once published, the member can login to the site (front-end only) and update their profile page. Member subscription payments are handled through Stripe.

    Design in the browser

We created some basic explorations of palette and patterns based on the existing logo. All design happened in the browser.

This is a hybrid theme using _S (Underscores) which takes advantage of many of the newer site editor features such as theme.json and template parts.

    lmcalpine.com - responsive screens

McAlpine Consulting needed help with an existing (not responsive!) WordPress website c. 2009. I rebuilt the site based on existing brand assets. WordPress development allowed for connected content and dynamic custom post types.

    Collaborative design process

Iconography followed the earthy, education-focused ethic of company.

We chose to use images of animals on service pages to reflect the playful, creative aspects of team-building and strategic planning.

All Saint's homepage shown on different devices

Originally, this was a Joomla site sorely in need of an update. All Saints’ approached me for a redesign (having heard of me through the Ravenswood Community Services project). We migrated their content to WordPress and created opportunities for a more dynamic and maintainable website through custom post types.

In 2023, we made some updates to include newer features available through blocks and the site editor.

Ravenswood Community Services - screen and device views

Working with Emily to care for our website has taken all of the stress out of it! When we hired her, we got much more than we could have hoped for. She’s incredibly responsive and easy to work with, proactive and reliable, and reacts with patience and grace when helping us navigate the technology involved with keeping our website in shape to support our work. It’s a relief to have a partner with technical know-how AND people skills. There aren’t enough stars for this review! Highly recommend.

    Investing in a Redesign

Ravenswood Community Services was facing some serious technical debt with a website running on an older version of Joomla. A pressing need to provide the best possible experience for their clients let them to decide to invest in a redesign.

    Choosing a Content Management System

In considering whether Joomla or WordPress would be the best fit, we looked at who would be responsible for using the tools we recommended, the pros and cons of each CMS, and the current hosting set-up. We decided that WordPress would be a vast improvement for both editors and clients.

    • We migrated all content to WordPress from an aging Joomla site
    • Consolidating content spread across multiple thin pages to create more useful and readable information that could be found in one place
    • Added some privacy-minded analytics to the site
    • Added a robust site search functionality
